MOGRA (JASMINE)

Mogra Jasmine FlowersJasmine Flowers are presumed to be the divine grace of gods. The soothing fragrance of these flowers mesmerise the senses of one and all. Endowed with the exotic perfumes, Jasmine flower is one of the most beautiful and fragrant amongst all the 15,000 flowering plant species in India. Majorly used as decorative flowers, these scented flowers are also used for medical motives and religious purposes.

Jasmine is also referred to as Mogra, Kundumalligai, Arabian Jasmine or Mallika. Its popularity in India can be easily understood as it is also praised as "Moonshine in the garden " by the Indians.

A prominent member of the family "Oleaceae" Jasmine is scientifically known as Jasminum sambac. An evergreen shrub, Jasmine is the pride of all beautiful gardens. It usually climbs up as a vine and reaches to a height of about 8 to 10 feet. Strangely the little flowers that this plant bears in huge clusters is simply about an inch each. The oval shaped green rich leaves, bear around five to nine leaflets which give the entire plant a very beautiful and artistic look. A symbol of purity and peace the beautiful jasmine flowers are white in color. Jasmine plant grows worldwide spreading its fragrance all over.

Jasminum sambac is a species of jasmine native to a small region in the eastern Himalayas in Bhutan and neighbouring India and Pakistan. It is cultivated in many places, especially across much of South and Southeast Asia.

It is widely cultivated for its attractive and sweetly fragrant flowers. The flowers are also used for perfumes and for making tea. It is known as the Arabia Jasmine in English.  The sweet, heady fragrance of Jasminum sambac is its distinct feature.
Typically, the flowers are harvested as buds during early morning. The flower buds are harvested on basis of colour, as firmness and size are variable depending on the weather. The buds have to be white, as green ones may not emit the characteristic fragrance for which they are known. Open flowers are generally not harvested as a larger amount of them is needed to extract oils and they lose their fragrance sooner.

It is one of the most commonly grown ornamentals in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh, where it is native. They are used to make thick garlands used as hair adornments. In Oman, Jasminum sambac features prominently on a child's first birthday. Flowers are sprinkled on the child's head by other children while chanting "hol hol". The fragrant flowers are also sold packed in between large leaves of the Indian almond (Terminalia catappa) and sewn together with strips of date palm leaves.
The flowers are used in Buddhist temples and in ceremonial garlands.
