The versatile British Berkefeld system is the ideal system for use at home, travel, outdoor activities or during unexpected emergencies.

This powerful system purifies both treated water and untreated raw water from such sources as remote lakes, streams, stagnant ponds and water supplies in foreign countries, where regulations may be substandard at best. Perfect for everyday use, outdoor activities and a must in hostile environments where electricity, water pressure or treated water may not be available.

Constructed of highly polished 304 stainless steel, the system comes complete with 2 filters -- ceramic Supersterasyl or Black Berkey filters, with or without PF Reduction Elements. This system has a storage capacity of about 8.5 litres (2.25 gallons) and when in use it stands about 48cm (19.25") in height with a diameter of 21cm (8.5"). The upper chamber nests within the lower chamber for transport and stands only 32cm (13") in height.

When used with 2 ceramic filters, the system is capable of filtering about 45-55 litres (12-15 gallons) per day.

PF elements contain inert high-grade activated alumina, an efficient way for reducing fluoride from drinking water. This element works in conjunction with a Doulton filter and will reduce unwanted impurities by adsorption.

    Technical Information:

    • Fluoride: Testing for fluoride was based on 20-30ppm of the ion in the influent aqueous solution at a flow rate of no more than 3 gpm (11 lpm) per cubic foot of media. Results of <1ppm of the fluoride ion in the effluent were typical for the media (>95% reduction). Under optimum conditions, effluent concentrations of less than 50 ppb were readily achieved (>99.75% reduction).
    • Arsenic: This product uniquely targets the entire family of arsenic oxide anions as well as the arsenic cations.
    • Lead: Tests have shown that when 7,500 litres of influent water at a concentration of lead of 150-200 ppb pass through 200 grams of media at a flow rate of 1gpm, the lead level was reduced to less than 1ppb (99% reduction).
    • MTBE (Methyl-tertiary-butyl-ether): Berkey PF elements are manufactured to exceed ANSI/NSF standard 53, which requires MTBE be reduced by at least two thirds from an influent rate (water going out) of less than 5ppb (>95% reduction*)
*Actual capacity is dependent on the presence of other competing contaminants in the source water. High levels of total organic carbons and volatile organic compounds may reduce the capacity and efficiency of the elements.

Under normal conditions it is recommended that each PF element be replaced after 1,000 litres or 6 months -- whichever comes first. If you consume about 5 litres of filtered water a day, you would need to replace it every 6 months in a system using 1 filter and 1 element at a time.
If using more than one PF element at once it is recommended to change both of them every 6 months. Actual capacity is dependent on the presence of other competing contaminants in the source water. High levels of fluoride, arsenic and heavy metals may reduce the capacity and efficiency of the elements.

Caution: Filters Must be Primed BEFORE USE!

Do not install PF Elements before reading installation instructions. For use with Durand Fluoride Reduction Systems or British Berkefeld Stainless Steel Systems.

Why do we need to filter our drinking water?
Town or municipal water can contain variable levels of contaminants such as chlorine, bacteria, cryptosporidium, giardia, rust, etc. Private water supplies such as wells, bores, springs, streams and rainwater tanks have not been treated, so can easily be contaminated with bacteria, cryptosporidium and giardia.

Any water can contain large amounts of unwanted impurities such as mud, silt, rust, etc. The pipes carrying and supplying the water may be adding impurities as well.

    How Activated Alumina Works
Activated Alumina is manufactured from aluminium hydroxide by dehydroxylating it in a way that produces a highly porous material; this material can have a surface area significantly over 200 square metres/gram. The compound is used as a filter of fluoride, arsenic and selenium in drinking water.

One of the effects of using this filter medium is that it may leach some aluminium in the water even though it removes the fluoride.

So when using Activated Alumina, you should always get at least a two-stage water filter. The second stage will contain a form of activated carbon that can take care of any aluminium problem.
