Reverse Osmosis, commonly referred to as RO, is one of the most advanced and effective water purification methods available and is used to remove contaminants from water, by pushing the water, under pressure, through a semi-permeable membrane.
Reverse osmosis is capable of removing up to 99%+ of the dissolved salts (ions), particles, colloids, organics, bacteria and pyrogens from water (although an RO system should not be relied upon to remove 100% of bacteria and viruses)
RO is possibly the only water purification system guaranteed to remove fluoride from your water.
Our Reverse Osmosis Water Purification System can be installed conveniently underneath the sink.
Take a look at our Hydrogen Water website for even more details.
So how does it work?
Reverse osmosis works by using high pressure to force water across a semi-permeable RO membrane, leaving almost all contaminants behind in the reject stream. Before this happens, though, water is filtered to remove particulates and, most importantly, chemicals, to prevent them from reaching the RO membrane, thus prolonging the life of the membrane. Finally, water passes through a final carbon filter to provide the cleanest, purest drinking water.
The Filtration Stages
Firstly, the system filters water through a three-stage filter system, consisting of:
- 5 Micron Polypropylene Sediment Filter to remove particulate matter from water, such as dirt, sand, sediment, and rust.
- Activated Carbon Filter to remove sediment, contaminants and impurities (via adsorption), such as chlorine, VOCs, taste, and odour.
- 1 Micron Polypropylene Sediment Filter for extra fine particulate filtration.
This initial filtration performs the same function that many regular household water filters do, by reducing or removing contaminants with filters that physically block contaminants from passing through with the water, as well as reducing chemicals through the adsorption process.
Next, water is pushed through a fine, semi-permeable membrane designed to purify water and remove almost all contaminants, including fluoride, heavy metals, totally dissolved solids, and more. “Semi-permeable” means it allows water to pass through, but prevents dissolved impurities from passing through. These impurities are directed to an undersink drain.
After water has passed through the membrane, it travels to the storage tank, where it is stored until you turn on your kitchen tap.
At this stage, water is filtered through another carbon cartridge post filter to further polish the water and remove any remaining traces of chemicals, tastes, and odours before consumption.
The total reduction of all contaminants in your tap water after this purification is 95% to 99%.
Please note that naturally occurring minerals in water, such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium, are removed during the process of water purification (reverse osmosis and distillation), as the molecules are too large to pass through the membrane. This demineralisation is the main disadvantage of RO water, along with the acidic pH, and is why it’s important to replace these with a healthy diet.
RO is not recommended for the purification of rain water, as it requires mains water pressure or a pump with a pressure rating of at least 40 PSI.
