BERKEY PF-4™ REDUCTION ELEMENTS
Due to popular demand, Durand now offers a specially designed new system, with a fluoride and arsenic reduction element.
This element works in conjunction with a Doulton filter to reduce the fluoride level by more than 95%. This element will last 1,000 litres, or 6 months, before it needs to be replaced.
Doulton Ceramic Filters will remove at least:
- 95% Chlorine
- 99.999% Harmful Bacteria
- 99.999% Amoeba
- 98% Suspended Solids
- 99.999% Giardia
- 99.999% Cryptosporidium
- 0.9micron > 99.99%
- 0.5micron > 99.9%
- 0.2micron > 98%
PF-4™ Reduction Elements remove:
- > 95% Fluoride
- Lead, Arsenic, MTBE, DBCP, THMs, Herbicides, Pesticides and Heavy Metal Ions
Each Fluoride Reduction System includes:
1 x Doulton Ceramic Filter (suitable for 2,000 litres)
2 x Berkey PF-4™ Reduction Elements (suitable for 1,000 litres or 6 months each)
Berkey PF elements contain inert high-grade activated alumina, an efficient way for reducing fluoride from drinking water. This element works in conjunction with a Doulton filter and will reduce unwanted impurities by adsorption.
- Fluoride: Testing for fluoride was based on 20-30ppm of the ion in the influent aqueous solution at a flow rate of no more than 3 gpm (11 lpm) per cubic foot of media. Results of <1ppm of the fluoride ion in the effluent were typical for the media (>95% reduction). Under optimum conditions, effluent concentrations of less than 50 ppb were readily achieved (>99.75% reduction).
- Arsenic: This product uniquely targets the entire family of arsenic oxide anions as well as the arsenic cations.
- Lead: Tests have shown that when 7,500 litres of influent water at a concentration of lead of 150-200 ppb pass through 200 grams of media at a flow rate of 1gpm, the lead level was reduced to less than 1ppb (99% reduction).
- MTBE (Methyl-tertiary-butyl-ether): Berkey PF-4™ elements are manufactured to exceed ANSI/NSF standard 53, which requires MTBE be reduced by at least two thirds from an influent rate (water going out) of less than 5ppb (>95% reduction*)
*Actual capacity is dependent on the presence of other competing contaminants in the source water. High levels of total organic carbons and volatile organic compounds may reduce the capacity and efficiency of the elements.
Under normal conditions it is recommended that each PF-4™ element be replaced after 1,000 litres or 6 months -- whichever comes first. If you consume about 5 litres of filtered water a day, you would need to replace it every 6 months in a system using 1 ceramic filter and 1 element at a time.
If using more than one PF-4™ element at once it is recommended to change both of them every 6 months. Actual capacity is dependent on the presence of other competing contaminants in the source water. High levels of fluoride, arsenic and heavy metals may reduce the capacity and efficiency of the elements.
Caution: Filters Must be Primed BEFORE USE!
Do not install PF-4™ Elements before reading installation instructions. For use with Durand Fluoride Reduction Systems or British Berkefeld Stainless Steel Systems. To be used in conjunction with a Doulton Super Sterasyl Ceramic Filter.
Durand Water Filter Systems are a healthy, attractive, benchtop, domestic water filter system, ideal for home and the office, that stores cool, great tasting drinking water at an affordable price.
The Australian made water filters use a replaceable and affordable Royal Doulton ceramic and activated carbon filter candle that removes unwanted impurities from your water supply.
Durand Filters are gravity fed and do not require any electricity or plumbing, and are NOT a fixed installation, so they are easy to move and clean.
Durand stoneware systems are all hand made and decorated in Queensland, Australia. Made with lead-free glazes, they are the perfect non-toxic way to filter your own water. They make an attractive and healthful addition to any home, office or workplace.
Designed to fit all major brands of ceramic replacement filters, Durand fits each system with what they consider the world's best ceramic filter element, the Royal Doulton Ceramic Filter Candle.
Under normal conditions it is recommended the PF-4™ elements be replaced at six month intervals. Actual capacity is dependent on the presence of other competing contaminants in the source water. High levels of total organic carbons, volatile organic compounds or certain inorganic minerals may reduce the capacity and efficiency of these elements. Note: do not boil this element.
Producing Clean, Safe Drinking Water
(for less than 2 cents a litre and no installation costs)
Why do we need to filter our drinking water?
Town or municipal water can contain variable levels of contaminants such as chlorine, bacteria, cryptosporidium, giardia, rust, etc. Private water supplies such as wells, bores, springs, streams and rainwater tanks have not been treated, so can easily be contaminated with bacteria, cryptosporidium and giardia.
Any water can contain large amounts of unwanted impurities such as mud, silt, rust, etc. The pipes carrying and supplying the water may be adding impurities as well.
Each Durand piece is handmade on a potters wheel and then hand finished and decorated. There will be variation of size, shape, colour and design, which ensures each system is uniquely individual. The ocean inlay designs also vary with each system and come in a variety of sea themes including shells, fish, turtles and seahorses. 12 litre systems hold approx. 3 litres of unfiltered water in the filter container and stores approx. 8-9 litres of filtered water in the storage container.
How Activated Alumina Works
Activated Alumina is manufactured from aluminium hydroxide by dehydroxylating it in a way that produces a highly porous material; this material can have a surface area significantly over 200 square metres/gram. The compound is used as a filter of fluoride, arsenic and selenium in drinking water.
One of the effects of using this filter medium is that it may leach some aluminium in the water even though it removes the fluoride.
So when using Activated Alumina, you should always get at least a two-stage water filter. The second stage will contain a form of activated carbon that can take care of any aluminium problem.
