I just packed up the sprouter to donate to St Vinnies as it was useless for alfalfa sprouting...(I bought it to get nice straight sprouts rather than the curly ones I grow in the Bio Snacky jars)....the swollen seeds got caught in the red filter thingies and the water would not drain properly....it was an expensive mistake buying it. The service was excellent on the phone when I placed my order and I was very impressed with how much time and care was taken when I asked questions.
I'm sorry to hear you weren't satisfied with your new sprouter. I'm not sure why you encountered trouble with the drainage siphons, as these are designed to use with sprouts such as alfalfa and we have never had any trouble ourselves, nor have we heard of this trouble from other clients.
The water in these sprouters does drain fairly slowly, especially compared to the dome, however if the water wasn't draining at all, obviously seeds got caught where they weren't supposed to be. For use long-term, the red drainage plugs do need a good clean or algae can build up, but this obviously wasn't your issue.
If you were still interested in a sprouter to grow your alfalfa, the dome sprouter might be more suited, as the trays are perforated and allow the water to drain pretty quickly. The only thing is you'll need to use the fleece paper, or else the seeds just drop through the holes.
Please get back to me if you'd like to discuss anything further.
