Lapis Lazuli

*A Stone of Total Awareness*

Lazurite is the blue mineral in "Lapis Lazuli", which is actually a rock composed primarily of massive blue Lazurite with small amounts of other minerals such as Calcite and Pyrite.  Lazurite usually forms in compact masses.  Crystals of Lazurite are very rare. Mined and carved as a decorative stone, Lapis Lazuli has a distinctive blue colour (due to the Lazurite), and this name is often mistakenly given for the mineral Lazurite itself.

For many people all over the world Lapis Lazuli is considered a stone of universal truth and friendship.

The blue stone is reputed to bring about harmony in relationships and to help its wearer be an authentic individual who may openly state his or her opinion.

Lapis Lazuli is a powerful stone for those who seek spiritual development. It brings mental clarity & emotional healing, and enhances judgment and wisdom.

It is a stone for acquiring wisdom and esoteric knowledge. Connection between the physical and celestial. Awareness, attunement, intuition and psychic ability. Stone of protection.

Lapis Lazuli

Lapis is a beautiful royal blue stone often associated with royalty.

Lapis Lazuli: Ultramarine Blue

The beautiful blues in paintings from the Renaissance are thanks to the blue of Lapis Lazuli, the blue rock loved by the ancients, from Mesopotamia, to Egypt, to Persia, to Greece and Rome.  The ancient city of Ur has a thriving trade in Lapis as early as the fourth millennium B.C.  The name is international, from the Latin, Lapis, which means stone, and from the Arabic, Azul, which means blue.  When Lapis was first introduced to Europe, it was called Ultramarinum, which means beyond the sea.  Ground Lapis was the secret of the blue in ultramarine, the pigment which painters used to paint the sea and the sky until the nineteenth century.  Lapis was also popular in inlays.

The columns of St Isaac's Cathedral in Petersburg are lined with Lapis and the Pushkin Palace in Petersburg has Lapis Lazuli panelling!

The Romans believed that Lapis was a powerful aphrodisiac.  In the Middle Ages, it was thought to keep the limbs healthy and free the soul from error, envy and fear.

Lapis is a dark blue microcrystalline rock composed primarily of the mineral Lazurite.  It often sparkles with golden pyrite inclusions.

Lapis Lazuli is still mined at the deposits of the ancient world in Afghanistan.  Lapis is also mined in Chile.  Small quantities are also produced in Siberia, in Colorado in the United States, and in Myanmar.

Lapis Lazuli is somewhat porous and should be protected from chemicals and solvents.  Warm soapy water is the best way to clean it.  Lapis is not very hard at 5.5 and should be protected from other jewellery when stored to avoid scratches.

Metaphysical Properties:

Lapis Lazuli

Lapis Lazuli is a stone said to have existed before *time was born*, assisting one in gaining admission to the domain of the unknown mysteries of the sacred texts and the esoteric ideas and enhancing the wisdom to understand the information.  It further allows one to gain access to, and to explore, the esoteric planetary knowledge.

The dodecahedral crystals generally come from Afghanistan and are quite rare.  The Afghanistan Lapis has been likened to the night sky bedecked with stars.  It promotes the connection between the physical plane and the celestial kingdom.  It represents the forces of initiation into wisdom and the mystical realm.

Lapis Lazuli is a *stone of total awareness*, helping to expand awareness and intellectual capacity, and allowing for conscious attunement to the intuitive and psychic aspects of one's nature.

A Lapis crystal can be placed over the third-eye to aid one in developing insight into one's own dreams.  It assists in providing a connection with the dream forces which are working to both guide and counsel one during altered states.

It has also been used as a protective stone, sheltering the wearer/carrier from physical danger and psychic attacks.

In addition, the crystalline form of Lapis can be used to access the energy to sustain health and to restructure cellular, muscular, and skeletal disorders.

Throughout history and legend, people from all cultures and continents have used the spiritual and healing powers of gems and crystals.  Utilized for purely religious purposes as well as communion, physical and spiritual healing, the power of gems and crystals is intertwined with the history of mankind.

It is widely believed that gems & crystals act as amplifiers when brought into contact with the human body’s seven-chakra points.  Chakra is the Sanskrit word for "wheel", and like all other wheels they spin, distributing life-force energy to all areas of the body.

While your chakras can become congested or unbalanced from stress, anxiety, environmental or many other unknown conditions, using gems or crystals in accordance with meditation or bodywork is known to help remove blockages and balance these energy points, promoting health, happiness and well being.

The seven-chakra points within our bodies rotate at different speeds that closely correspond to the vibrational frequencies of different crystals and gemstones.  By utilizing the appropriate crystals and gemstones that correspond to each chakra, it is believed we can unlock the door to the world of crystal healing and tap its powerful, health imbibing powers.

The benefits of long-term crystal exposure to the chakras is said to be one of the most effective forms of alternative healing available.  Healing crystals and gemstones come in highly attractive and functional forms; wearing crystal jewellery or gemstone crystal wraps is both a practical and fashionable way of reaching your health goals.  Also available for use with meditation or simply carrying around in a pocket or crystal pouch are tumbled gemstones, cut crystals, rough and faceted gemstones, pendulums and sacred geometry shaped crystals.
